A Message From Stingray - Thursday, June 25, 2020

I’ve been asked a few times over the last few weeks about how covid-19 has impacted the American Cancer Society, and I’ve answered as honestly as I could. The Society has made adjustments to become more efficient, including a complete restructuring of positions, roles and responsibilities. All staff were offered the option to apply for any position. I realized that there were multiple paths for me to consider, including the option to pursue opportunities outside of the American Cancer Society. As I weighed my options, I felt that none of the re-organized positions at the American Cancer Society were the right fit for me at this time. But the one constant was that I wanted to stay involved with our community in Second Life.

Ultimately, I decided to pursue another career path that would be a better fit for my family.

Remember that clip we played during the Opening Ceremony, where Mama, Nikki, Trager and I were talking to Julie Brickner? That was an excerpt from a meeting where we discussed the idea that I could still be the Ambassador between the American Cancer Society and Second Life, even if I wasn’t an employee. Fortunately, what WE have accomplished TOGETHER over the last 16 years was enough for them to recognize, value, and appreciate that the reason this works...is not because it’s me. Not because it’s you. But because it’s US.

And from that understanding - we were able to solidify a deal between the American Cancer Society and Linden Lab where I will remain the liaison between the ACS, you (our community), and Linden Lab.

If you’re wondering what will be different in 2021, I can assure you that the only difference will be my title. Your fundraising dollars will continue to be protected by supervision of Linden Lab and the American Cancer Society. Your donations will continue to support The Society’s global mission of funding cancer research and patient/caregiver services both in and outside of Second Life. Our tools will continue to improve. Our island and our services will remain intact. Our community will continue to grow. And more Relayers will be empowered to act in an environment that we have established to allow you to use the virtual world to make a meaningful difference in the fight against cancer.

I look to the successes of the 2020 season as examples of our resilience. I have met so many talented Relayers, all prepared to do more so that we can continue to become better and better each year. I’ve learned from you all that whatever curveball life throws at us, the reason why we can handle it is because we handle it… together.

We are the greatest community in Second Life - not because of any one of us, but rather because it is all of us working together. And while our lives have all changed over the last 16 years, we have built relationships with one another based on many years of commitment, respect, and trust. And I ask you to continue to place your trust in me...and in one another...and continue the walk…..together.

Oh, there is one other thing that will be different - at some point in the next 10 months, we’ll have to stop saying that we’ve raised over $3.5 Million (usd) because we’ll have raised $4 Million, all-time!!

Saffia Widdershins and Zander Greene have offered to host a live stream interview/Q&A session where we can discuss the future of ACS in SL. We encourage our supporters to ask questions through this form. Watch the Relay For Life of Second Life Facebook Page to learn the date, time, and location of the live stream.

June 08, 2020

Last year, the MC community led the way in coming together as a community to support the American Cancer Society.

In 2020, three communities joined together for the 10 Days of Relay and raised $50,610.

The MC’s, who pioneered the community concept, raised $25,927. The Bellisseria community worked together to raise $16,740 in their first year. And the GOR community joined together and raised $7,960 at their GOR Festival.

These significant accomplishments by three extraordinary communities were inadvertently not mentioned at our Relay 2020 Closing Ceremony.

The 10 Days of Relay was an incredible event with so many people participating in so many different ways. It has been instrumental in reaching new places and has enabled us to help people we would never have met without them.

As we look forward to our next Relay season, we see even more communities joining us in our fight for a world without cancer.

A sincere thank you for all that you accomplished and a big Relay For Life hug.

Can you believe there are less than 7 days until the 2020 Relay For Life of Second Life 24-hour weekend event? Thank you for all of the time, talent, fundraising, and donations. With your help, we have already passed our $250,000 USD goal - and I can’t wait to celebrate our cancer survivors and our fundraising success with you on June 6-7!

To prepare for Relay Weekend, please read through this important information:

In order for us to deliver you the best possible experience, the following activities have a deadline of Thursday, June 4 at 9pm SLT.

  • Fundraising Club: We will use your fundraising total at the deadline to determine your fundraising club badge for Relay Weekend. Also, the top Linden, top Website, and top Overall fundraising teams will earn badges based on your totals at this deadline. Badges will be placed on your team’s campsite label.

  • Campsite Badges: Your campsite will earn badges for matching the 2020 theme and for delivering cancer education from the American Cancer Society by the deadline. Badges will be placed on your team’s campsite label.

  • Dedications to be read during the Luminaria Ceremony must be submitted by the deadline. You can submit your dedications here.

  • Join us for the Opening Ceremony, starting at 10am SLT at the stage on RFL Embrace. If the region is full, overflow attendees can land on the American Cancer Society island or RFL Empower.

  • Listen to the complete Relay For Life of Second Life online at https://relayradio.t1radio.com. Listening online may improve your overall experience by reducing lag and buffering. Plus, you won’t miss anything if you crash!

  • Watch the Relay For Life Virtual Telethon, streaming live on Facebook from 10am SLT through the end of the Luminaria Ceremony.

  • Participate in the Theme Hours! The more you put into your Relay experience, the more you’ll get out of it. Make sure you’re prepared to have fun with all the various theme hours. Check them out here.

  • Pick up your Relay Weekend Travel Guide from any Relay Info Station along the track. The guide offers information and landmarks to help you get around.

  • Join the Relay For Life Volunteers group in Second Life to keep up with news, info, and conversation about all things Relay!

  • Join the ACS in SL Discord server to keep up with the Relay community, even when you’re not logged into Second Life.

  • This year, we will use the traditional “Flood the Regions” party as our Wrap-Up party! This will give us all a chance to celebrate together without the feeling of a ceremony and a bunch of speeches from a stage. We hope you join us on Wednesday, June 10, for the party (more info coming in the groups) where we’ll have a blast together. Bring your floaties!!

  • Spirit of Relay Nominations due Monday, June 8, 2020. We’ll present the Spirit of Relay Individual and Team at the Wrap-Up Party on Wednesday, which means all nominations need to be submitted no later than June 8.

  • Any team fundraising that occurs after Wrap-Up will still count toward your final 2020 Fundraising Club Level. The team totals close on June 30.
